Death Valley in '49. Important chapter of California pioneer history, the autobiography of a pioneer, detailing his life from a humble home in the Green Mountains to the gold mines of California; and particularly reciting the sufferings of the band of men, women and children who gave "Death Valley" its name. By William Lewis Manly. I downloaded this to my Visor for recent driving trip through California deserts. It is fascinating. Starting with his birth in Vermont the author chronicles his moves west, first to Ohio, then Michigan, then Wisconsin. Then in the 1840's he begins to hear about California and heads West. When the wagon train he has joined as a driver and hunter decides to spend the winter in Salt Lake City and wait for the mountain passes to open he and many of the other drivers decide to try a southerly route instead.

Interview with Marc Canter Very interesting interview with one of the original members of what would become MacroMedia. Great quote: "Macromedia misses the boat on so much - it's pathetic. But that's what happens when you have caretakers who take over a company. There's no innovation going on there and that's what hurting them the most."
Jack Layton: the Tim Hortons of the left How the NDP and the Canadian left has lost their way. Having abandoned socialism after the collapse of the Soviet Union they have no vision of the future to advocate.
